Curriculum Breadth and Subject Content Visibility
Charlton Park Academy’s curriculum offers a broad and balanced educational experience that integrates core academic learning, functional skills, creativity, and personal development.
In line with DfE statutory publication requirements and the SEND Code of Practice (2015), the curriculum provides a structured offer across all key subjects, differentiated through five pathways.
Subject Content Overview
Pathways 1, 2, and 3 follow a curriculum structured around four key areas: Preparation for Adulthood (PfA), Maths, English, and Cultural Capital.
Pathways 4 and 5 have a curriculum designed around the four areas of need: Cognition and Learning, Communication and Interaction, Social, Emotional and Mental Health, and Physical and Sensory, as outlined in the tables below.
Core Curriculum Areas

English and Communication – literacy development through phonics, reading comprehension, writing, oracy, symbol-supported text, and AAC. Focused on enabling functional and expressive communication for all learners.
Mathematics – functional numeracy, reasoning, measurement, data handling, and financial literacy, enabling pupils to apply mathematical understanding in real-life contexts.
Science and Technology (The World Around Us) – enquiry-based exploration, adapted through sensory or practical investigation to promote curiosity and scientific thinking.
Personal Development / Preparation for Adulthood (PfA) – structured around the four PfA pillars: Employment, Independent Living, Community & Friendships, and Good Health.
Cultural Capital Subjects – a humanities and creative arts offer including History, Geography, Religious Education, Art, Music, and Drama, and Relationships and Sexual Education and Health Education (PSHE). These provide moral, social, and spiritual development and strengthen self-expression and cultural awareness.
Physical Education & Health (Helath Related Exercise) – movement, team games, physiotherapy, and sensory-motor programmes designed to promote coordination, confidence, and wellbeing.
Digital Learning and Computing – development of ICT, assistive technology, online safety, and functional digital literacy across all pathways.
Accreditation and Qualification Framework
Making learning outcomes and accreditation routes clear for parents, governors, and inspectors
The Charlton Park Academy curriculum integrates accreditation pathways that validate learning, ensure progression, and support aspirational outcomes for all students.
Accreditation is mapped to each learning pathway and aligned with Preparation for Adulthood outcomes, ensuring students achieve meaningful recognition that supports post-19 transitions to further education, employment, training, or supported living.
All qualifications comply with Ofqual and DfE recognition frameworks, and are designed to reward functional skill development, employability, personal progress, and life readiness.
Progression routes are tracked through the academy’s Qualification Map, reviewed annually to ensure parity, accessibility, and ambition across all pathways.
