Here are some important dates to remember in May for students, parents and carers.

Monday 5th May will be a Bank Holiday
Half Term Holidays will take place from Monday 26th May until Monday 2nd June. Students will return to school on Tuesday 3rd June (Monday 2nd June is an INSET day for CPA staff only).

Important Dates for our Students
Event: Autism Awareness Week
Date: Monday 28th April to Friday 2nd May
Time: All week
About: Autism Awareness Week is an opportunity for everyone to come together and raise awareness, foster acceptance, and create a society where autistic people are supported, understood, and empowered.
On Friday 2nd May we are asking our students to wear blue, or an item of BLUE clothing to help raise awareness.

Event: VE Day 80th Anniversary
Date: Thursday, 8th May
Time: All day
About: On 8 May 2025, we mark the historic 80th anniversary of VE Day to unite and celebrate 80 years of peace since the end of Word War II in Europe that so many millions paid the ultimate sacrificed to achieve it. VE Day 80 is not only a tribute to those who fought for the freedom we all enjoy today, but also a powerful reminder of the resilience and unity that have defined our country ever since. We will be sending out some information about how we will be celebrating this event.

Event: Mental Health Awareness Week
Date: Monday 12th to Friday 18th May
Time: All week
About: This year the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week is ‘Community’. It’s important to celebrate the power and importance of being part of a safe and positive community.

Event: Sunshine Day
Date: Wednesday 14th May
Time: All day
About: The theme for Sunshine Day will be ‘Community’ in line with the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week. This is a chance for our students to celebrate our CPA community and think about ways of making it a great place for everyone. We ask that our students come dressed in their favourite brightly coloured clothes to help celebrate.

Event: Creative Arts Week
Date: Monday 19th to Friday 23rd May
Time: All week
About: This is a chance for our students to get creative and get involved with all types of creative arts activities.

Event: Pyjamarama Reading Day
Date: Friday 23rd May
Time: All day
About: This is a chance for our students to take part in reading activities. Read and listen to their favourite stories. We ask that our students wear their favourite pjs to school (no slippers please).

Dates for our Parents and Carers
Session : Yoga for parents (free)
Date: 5 sessions (Every Thursday 25th April to 22nd May)
Time: 1pm to 2.00pm
About:This will be an hour of relaxation and stress release. We need a minimum of 7 parents to join this session in order for it to run. Please email Sara Johnson to let her know you’re coming on email: sjohnson@charltonparkacademy.co.uk.

Session: Maths for parents
Date: Thursday 1st May
Time: 10 to 11.15am
Location: Charlton Park Academy
About: We have a Parent Maths Session with Ailish, our Maths Lead. Please let Sara Johnson (sjohnson@charltonparkacademy.co.uk) know if you would like to learn more about how maths is being taught in school by joining the parent session on 10- 11.15 am.

Session: Occupational Therapy for parents
Date: Thursday 8th May
Time: Timeslots available
Location: Charlton Park Academy

Session: Speech and Language Therapy session for parents
Date: Thursday 8th May
Time: Timeslots available
Location: Charlton Park Academy
About: This parent session will provide an overview of AAC, what it is, and how it is used. We will bring along some paper-based and power-based AAC for parents to explore, to support parents to feel confident in supporting their young people with their AAC. We are happy to troubleshoot if parents are finding it challenging to embed AAC systems for their child/young person in their home environment.

Event: Sunshine Day
Date: Wednesday 14th May
Time: All day
About: The theme for Sunshine Day will be ‘Community’ in line with the theme for Mental Health Awareness Week. This is a chance for our students to celebrate our CPA community and think about ways of making it a great place for everyone. We ask that our students come dressed in green, or their favourite brightly coloured clothes to help celebrate.

Session: Leaving Home and Moving On, an information day for carers/parents
Date: 16th May
Time: 9.30am to 2pm
Location: Woolwich Town Hall, Rooms 4,5, and 6
About: this session is for carers/parnets who would like to know more about planing ahead for your young peropn. You need to book this session or sessions and this will be such a useful session with lots of information rleating to planning, understanding the care act, living options and emotional adjustment.

Session: Independent Living Workshop for Post-16 Parents
Date: 16th May
Time: 10am to 12pm
Location: Trinity Church Community Centre, 265 Burrage Road, Plumstead, Se18 7JW
About: Our Independent Living Workshop is designed specifically for Post-16 parents. This workshop aims to support you to help develop the essential life skills required for successful independent living as they transition from school to adulthood.
This workshop will cover a variety of key topics such as personal hygiene, self care, basic meal preparation and dressing.
We believe this workshop will provide you with valuable and practical skills that will build confidence and independence to help support your young person as they prepare for adulthood.

Event: Communication Works South
Date: Thursday 22nd May
Time: 9.15am to 4pm

About: CENMAC’s annual event Communication Works is a celebration of assistive technology in education. Our keynotes
We are excited to welcome Abdi Omar, Inspirational Speaker and AAC Consultant as a keynote speaker at the event. Abdi Omar has been instrumental in the roll out of the Proloquo Classroom app at Charlton Park Academy and many CPA students will be familiar with Abdi’s weekly AAC sessions where he encourages students to use their devices via fun and engaging activities.
We are also delighted to have CENMAC student ambassador Khamani as MC and keynote speaker. Khamani has had a very busy year winning a number of Young Entrepreneur Awards for his craft business KJ’s Craft Time. Khamani recently held a filming session here at Charlton Park Academy for his final college project featuring some of our CPA students!
Communication Works is a great opportunity for parents and carers to come along and see first-hand the wide range of assistive technology available to support students. We have over 40 exhibitors coming along so it will be a busy and interesting day.

Session: English for parents
Date: Thursday 22nd May
Time: 10 to 11am
Location: Charlton Park Academy
About: Come and look at what your students are leaning in English and how you can support them at home.

Session: Parent/Carer Craft Group
Date: Every Tuesday during term time
Time: 10am to 12pm

About: Please come along to learn new skills- sewing/crafts etc

Session: Charlton Chit Chat Parent/Carer Coffee Morning
Date: Every Wednesday during term time
Time: 10am to 12pm

About: Please come along to meet other parents and carers, have a chat and a cup of tea or coffee.

Session: Choir parent group
