Music plays a vital role

At Charlton Park Academy, we believe that music plays a vital role in building confidence, communication, and emotional well-being. Our Music curriculum is tailored to meet the diverse needs of our learners, providing engaging, accessible, and enjoyable experiences for all.

Charanga digital learning platform

Our Music lessons are supported by Charanga, a high-quality digital learning platform that offers a rich library of songs, topics, instrument courses, and creative apps. This allows us to deliver structured, inclusive, and flexible lessons that help pupils explore rhythm, melody, and sound in ways that are both fun and interactive. Pupils have opportunities to listen, perform, and create music, developing their listening skills, communication, and sense of joy through musical exploration.

Discover and express

Through Music, we encourage every child to discover their creative potential and express themselves in a supportive and inspiring environment.

Our students take part in weekly music lessons where they learn and develop a wide range of musical skills in an inclusive, engaging, and supportive environment.  Students are supported individually throughout music lessons, with adaptations made to ensure every child can fully participate and experience success.

All students have the opportunity to learn about and participate in:

  • Singing
  • Listening
  • Composing
  • Performing/Instrumental Performance
  • Music around the world

Our curriculum encourages students to sing a variety of Signed Songs, promoting community, shared expression, and an accessible way to understand and communicate meaning through music. This repertoire is carefully organised to enable easy access and choice.

Students learn to play both tuned and untuned instruments, supporting the development of rhythm, coordination, and performance skills. This includes whole-class djembe drumming, which encourages teamwork, listening, and musical awareness.

One-to-one music sessions

At Charlton Park Academy, we also offer one-to-one music sessions, which are available during the school day and taught by our music therapist specialists in our dedicated music therapy room.

Post-16 music sessions

We have Post-16 music sessions that are highly valuable, offering significant benefits for wellbeing, the development of essential transferable skills, and crucial pathways for future academic and career development. These sessions play a vital role in a young person’s overall development during a critical age.

Create and develop their own compositions

Through Music Technology, pupils have the opportunity to create and develop their own compositions using iPads,  CMPSR (Digit Music) exploring musical patterns and sequences in interactive and motivating ways.

The school also has its own recording studio, which provides a unique, hands-on environment for students to explore creativity, sound production, and musical expression. Working in the studio allows pupils to develop both their musical and technical skills, building confidence as they create, record, and share their work.

Podcast

In addition, we run a school podcast called “The Student’s Voice”, allowing students to engage in educational and inspirational discussions on topics such as current events, world news, history, sports, pop culture, and entertainment. Through podcasting, pupils are introduced to a variety of communication styles, including narration, casual and scripted dialogue, and interview techniques. Students are encouraged to choose topics that interest them, promoting ownership, independence, and confidence while developing their speaking and listening skills.
