Extreme Heat Advice for Parents of High Need SEND Pupils

Guidance for school attendance during high temperatures

Preparing Your Child for the Heat

  • Dress your child in light, loose‑fitting clothing.
  • Apply high‑factor sun cream before they leave home.
  • Provide a hat or cap if tolerated.
  • Send in any cooling aids (cooling towels, fans, cold packs), clearly labelled.

Hydration and Medical Needs

  • Ensure your child brings a full water bottle (insulated if possible).
  • If they need support to drink, remind staff of their hydration routine.
  • Check that all medication is in school, in date, and labelled.
  • Inform the school if your child has temperature‑sensitive medical conditions.

Care Plans, EHCP Needs and Communication

  • Confirm the school has the latest care plan and emergency contacts.
  • Share any heat‑related triggers or regulation strategies that help your child.
  • Be prepared for the possibility of early collection if your child becomes distressed, fatigued, or unwell

Transport Arrangements

  • Check that transport is running normally.
  • Ensure escorts/drivers know if your child needs extra ventilation, water, or cooling aids during travel.

Short‑Notice Changes

Due to heat‑related risks and staffing pressures, some classes may need to close at short notice. Please ensure:

  • Your phone is on loud.
  • An emergency contact is available.
  • You have alternative arrangements in place.

If Your Child Is Unwell

If your child shows signs of overheating, dehydration, increased seizures, extreme fatigue, or sensory overload, it may be safer to keep them at home and inform the school.
