Work Experience Lead: Kurt Knoche
Charlton Park Academy has developed
an inclusive work experience programme
offering a range of experiences both in
and out of school.
Work experience plays an important part in developing student’s independence
and self-confidence. Goals of the Work Experience programme are:
- To provide a meaningful work experience or work related learning for all students at Charlton Park Academy.
- Establish and build positive relationships with businesses empathic to the needs of Charlton Park Academy Students.
- Have students communicate their choices about what work experience they would like to see provided by
Charlton Park Academy.
How does it work?
Work experience placements are generally spread over a half term although some may be longer. Starting with a visit then followed by a 2 or 3 hour trial or half day experience. Students are introduced to their work experience choice before attending for as long as the school day allows or staff are able to support. Ideally, for those most able a full working day is going to be the best experience. Students are supported by a member of staff. Depending on the needs of the student, support is slowly withdrawn to allow as much independence as possible.
Could you offer a student work experience?
When you offer a work experience placement to a young person with a learning or physical disability your business can contribute to meeting equal opportunities and diversity priorities. The process can positively challenge staff to be more empathetic and flexible in the way they work, developing their management and communication skills. These students have a lot to offer and based on their positive placement performance many go onto become volunteers and employees for their provider.
We will support your business every step of the way, by identifying suitable tasks for the student, monitoring student progress, and where appropriate school staff will attend with the student to help them adjust.
